Abbreviations and Explanations

Abbreviation Explanation
Pot Size This refers to the size of the container in gallons. The “ marking may not be present if the pot is a standard size, i.e., 3 indicates that the plant is in a three gallon container, while 8” indicates an 8” container. Trade pots, which can be smaller than the gallon number indicates, are not differentiated here. Check with the producer if there is any chance that the container is not the full number of gallons indicated by the catalog reference listed here.
Height Plant heights are listed with one number indicating the minimum number of feet from the ground to the top set of branches. In other words, the number “6” would indicate that a plant is a minimum of 6 feet tall, or, its top set of branches extends to six feet above the ground. Often nurseries list plants in multiples of feet, such as, 6’-8’, 8’-10’, or 10’-12’. These would be listed in Hortsources as 6, 8, and 10 respectively. You can be sure that a height listed in Hortsources.com is the minimum height that the grower has given in his catalog for the plant, and it could be taller, particularly late in the growing season. Contact the nurseryman to get an accurate indication of the true height of the plant.
Caliper The caliper of a plant is the diameter of the stem at a point 6 inches above the ground. Often nursery catalogs list plants with ranges of calipers, i.e., 2”-2 ½”, 2 ½”-3”, or 3”-4.” These would appear in Hortsources.com as simply 2, 2.5, and 3 respectively. Contact the nurseryman to get an accurate indication of the actual caliper, which might be significantly larger than the primary number listed here.
